Shawn:
The May Bank Holiday Monday, 4 May, timetable is now available.
Not looking good if similar engineering work is repeated on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday.
No through trains from Crewe apart from a 7.32, price has gone up as well
No trains from Crewe on the Sunday other than via Manchester.
East Coast route to Newcastle seems unaffected and may be cheaper.
If all else fails we could still leave early Saturday morning and be in Carlisle by Sunday night, only 200 miles?
Just 3 weeks to find out what adventures the 25 May timetable offers!

You mean you're thinking of thepenine cycleway from derby all the way to Bellingham. Where would you stop?
ReplyDeleteIsn't it more like 300 miles?
No! Straight up the A6.
DeleteI've just been looking at train times and fares for Matlock to Newcastle. Obviously, you cannot see yet the details for the day I want to go, but 3 weeks before (4 May) the fare is £29 on ALL trains. Is this possible? Can I expect this to be the fare when the new timetable is announced?
ReplyDeleteEven a thousand monkeys on the tills could not hit the prevailing fare on any particular day.
DeleteDerby - Newcastle is £27.90 on 4 May, but goes back to the weekday fare of £87.20 on 5 or 6 May. But the Crewe - Carlisle fare moves in the opposite direction: £56.50 on 4 or 5 May and £27.90 on 6 May!
Try splitting the journey say Derby to York and then York to NCL. It's cheaper that way. As Martin suggests, fares are unpredictable and inexplicable.
