I had my longest ride so far this
year – 132 km. Passing through Seyches (belltower/arched entrance to the
village, next to the church), I arrived at the canal (La Gaulette Lock) and
sought out the two B&Bs near Lagruère where we shall be staying. One was
quite tricky to find, so I’m glad I made the effort. Note the diseased trees;
there was hardly one that was not affected. A shame! Note also the British
narrow boats – brought by low loader, I guess, unless one of them featured in
the book ‘Narrow Dog to Carcassonne .’
Suspension bridge over the River Garonne, to La Réole (oldest town hall in France , built
by Richard the LH) and La Réole itself on the river, reminiscent of Chateau
Gontier 2 years ago. I don’t know if we’ll have time to go there – maybe the
faster of us might manage a diversion! (but that lets me out!) I may have remarked somewhere else that
from Arcachon to Bazas we will be riding bits of greenway which will one day be
all joined up under a departmental road number, D804 (at least in the Gironde).
Now I see that the Garonne
Canal towpath also has a
number, D809! In all, I covered 36 km of the canal – all tarmacked, of course.
And now an apology. A spreadsheet
I sent out after I found those two B&Bs contains two errors. The distance
from Lagruère to Agen is not 73 km as stated, but only 43 km, making Day 2 our
shortest. That’s the good news! More good news is that there is no error
overall, as far as I am aware. It follows, however, that there is a mistake
elsewhere: in fact, Agen to Toulouse
will be in the region of 109 km, not 81 km. Sorry about that, but not a huge
distance to do, given the terrain and the wind (we hope!) On that subject, the
wind today was blowing from the SE – we can do without that, thanks!!! (but it
wasn’t strong) It was also quite hot today: 26 C was predicted and I’d guess it
reached that!
28C today! I did some work in the garden and got the guy in the local bike shop to put a new cassette of gears on my Raleigh - long overdue! I also put a new chain on. Hopefully, the chain won't jump now, altho that will depend on the chainwheels, I guess. I've added some 'butterfly' bars to my Mercier (bought from Auchan in 2000) because the originals cannot be raised, but now I must lengthen the cables.
ReplyDeleteLast time I looked the Jet-Stream was looped round the South of France and probably responsible for the wet windy Atlantic weather you were sharing with us. Warmer weather from Africa suggests it may be moving towards its rightful position further North.
DeleteCan't wait.
Martin
Martin, what day/s did you want to lead? What about Shawn and Maldwyn? Peter has the last two, I've got the first. Does anyone want anything else from down here? Place your orders! Still sunny here. 29C on Friday, cooler today, so far 22C. Just been doing some gardening.
ReplyDeleteAnd today the swifts have arrived from Africa.
ReplyDeleteAnd the other day I saw a hoopoe! Cuckoos seem to be a bit down this year, as they are in the UK, I believe. Jays are common.
ReplyDeleteBTW, sh = me. Sylvie had been accessing her Gmail account and didn't sign out.
Have you seen these, BTW? This is our starting point. Super pictures!

We get a free glossy put into our mail-box here, a bit like the Derbyshire CC one back home. It's called "47 Magazine". The latest edition has an article about greenways in this department ("Each to his own rhythm"). It features the Garonne Canal and says
ReplyDeletethat 230 km of new greenway are planned. Bring it on, I say!
What day is free? If I say day 2 then as its only 43km! My first day will be around 150km(!!)as I am cycling from Bordeaux to the Atlantic coast so an easy day to lead sounds good to me. Thanks for the weather reports please keep them up to help remind me to pack the sun cream and lip screen. Don't want a repeat of the problems of last time.
ReplyDelete#Shawn
Don't remind me - the blazing sun and that sweltering heat in Ireland almost killed me!
ReplyDeleteYou are right, Shawn: it must be about another 75 km from Bordo to the Dune - unless you are riding from Merignac (less than 60 km then). You could take the train with the other 2.
ReplyDeleteShawn, Day 3 is the very short one. It's yours! Shall I draw up a schedule for leaders day by day? Peter, did you want the last 2 then?
ReplyDeleteYes. I wll lead the last 2.
ReplyDeleteWaiting for my YHA card to arrive. Did anyone else join?
ReplyDeleteElle est arrivée ce matin, ma carte d'adhérent YHA! Youpi! (that's French for yippee!)
