Irish Ride 2011 - route ideas.

Further to the meeting we had at the Flowerpot I have been firming up ideas on routes/stopovers - without total success. The first 3 days seem OK. They are:

Day 1: Belfast via Lagan Valley and Loughshore Trail to Antrim - about 60 miles
Day 2: Antrim to Portglenone on R94 thence "overland" to Balleymoney and Bushmills (nearest town to Giants Causeway). This is also about 60 miles.  I have not checked but there is sure to be accomodation around here and Coleraine is a further 16 miles which may be a little too far allowing time to properly visit the Giants Causeway.
Day 3: Bushmills to Castlerock on R94 thence to Magilligan Point for the Ferry to Greencastle and down the west side of Lough Foyle (the Republic side) to Derry. This is another about 60 miles.

After there I am unable to make my mind up. We need to be in the vicinity of Knock Airport by the end of day 7. Being in Ireland, Knock Airport is not at Knock but nearer Charlestown but it is 30 miles south of Sligo on the N17 road. There is a late afternoon flight from Knock to East Mids so Sligo or Carrick-on-Shannon could be stopover points. Carrick to Knock is about 35 miles. Sligo is reachable comfortably in a day from Donegal which is itself within a day's ride of Derry so we have two days ; one cycling day and one non cycling day. As I have not cycled in Donegal my personal preference would be to take 2 or even 2 and a half days between Derry and Donegal; say a short hop to Strabane (20 miles) after a morning exploring Derry, stop there on day 4 then to somewhere like Dunglow for day 5 overnight and finally via Killybegs to Donegal for day 6. Both these latter 2 days would be in the 45 to 50 miles range.
There are Youth Hostels (An Oige) at both Donegal and Sligo, and "Paddy's Palace" Hostels in Belfast and Derry. I do not know of accomodation possibilites in the other potential overnight stops.

Comments welcome!

UPDATED 20th February

This is my latest suggestion for the second half of the tour, from Londonderry onwards. The route has been determined in part by the lack of accomodation (other than hostels) for a group of 5 or 6 of us without resorting to splitting up each night or paying a large sum at a hotel.

Day 4. Londonderry to Buncrana - 15 miles - on the east shore of Lough Swilly. We are now in the Republic. Cross Lough Swilly on the ferry to Rathmullan and then cycle the 20 or so miles to the Tra-na-Rosan Irish YHA Hostel on the Rosguill peninsula near Downies. Overnight stop.

Day 5 Tra-na-Rosan to Errigal Hostel. The most direct route is about 27 miles, while going more coastward via Dunfanaghy still makes it less than 35.

Day 6 Errigal to Donegal via Dunglow and Glenties. Total 43 miles

Day 7 Donegal to Sligo via the North West Cycle Trail - around 40 miles.

This would mean we were in Sligo by Monday night, 30th May and homeward bound on the 31st. One or two comments suggest this may be a day too long and, if so, we could cut out the Tra-na-Rosan stop and go direct Londonderry to Errigal on day 4 and so arrive in Sligo on day 6 (29th ). This would make day 4 distance around about 50 miles if we went the direct route. I have to say that I would prefer not to miss this trip to N Donegal but will be guided by the majority.

I attach the link to An Oige, the Irish YH organisation for you to view the hostels at Tra-n-Rosan, Errigal, Donegal City and Sligo.

What do you think?

  1. Well done Peter. So if we are to start on monday 23rd May we should be in Sligo by Sunday 29th May. Short (30mile) transfer to Knock on Monday 30th for afternoon flight sounds good to me.

By the way is anyone joining Les,Alan & I for our ride on R63 Conkers site next thursday. I am assured Les is preparing breakfast for all comers in his cosy caravan!

  2. Looks like a pretty good plan. I have checked out flights to Dublin. Flying from East Mids, dep at 06.35, with Monday rtn at 22.15 or 21.40 on Sunday eve (not sure when we will be back in Dublin). Flight cheap, bike £80 rtn with Rynair. Dublin airport has luggage storage facilities across the road from the terminal building, so you can leave your bike bag there - I will ring the airport to check out the cost - I believe they charge by the day. Clyde have you decided on your travel method? Paddy's Place and some of the other Hostels look good for the overnight in Belfast. Are we now firm on the dates? Can we book our travel arrangements as fares will inevitably rise.

  3. I've still done nothing so far! But I will try to book flights this weekend or early next week.

  4. I am happy to start in Belfast on 23rd May and return from Knock with ryanair on the 30th May. The route and hostel accomodation you have highlighted Peter looks good on paper and I will be swayed by your route planning ideas but I really would prefer to be in Sligo for the evening of the 29th if possibly. Can everyone confirm their preferred dates for arrival in Belfast and Sligo

  5. Can someone help me with my maths, please? We start the ride at Belfast on 23 May, right? So our first night is Antrim, also on 23 May. Then we stay at Bushmills 24, Derry 25, Tra-na-Rosann 26, Errigal 27, Donegal 28, Sligo 29 and we ride to Knock and fly back home on 30 May? And if we shorten it by one day, we will be returning on 29 May. Or are we still having a rest day? If not, Shawn, you would be back when you want with the 7-day ride, and I'm fine either way - I'll go with the majority! I'm beginning to get to grips with Irish geography and it's looks like a good route, Peter - well done and thanks! BTW, Maldwyn and I have booked planes to Dublin on Sun 22 May and we will be in Belfast that evening.

  6. I had assumed that the 23rd would be a day of travelling and that day 1 of the trip would be Tuesday 24th. Now that Clyde and Maldwyn have booked planes I accept that day 1 is the Monday 23rd. This means that I will not join you for the first day (overland travel on a Sunday is not to be wished on ones's worst enemy!) but will take a train out of Belfast on Tuesday am (possibly to Ballymena) and join you shortly after your start from Antrim. Incidentally I had discovered a shortage of accomodation in Antrim for a party of 6 (if Ian joins us) but had found a resonable B&B in Ballymena. Now that there are fewer on that first day I leave it up to you to decide where to stay.
Travel back to Blighty will be on 30th as Shawn requests - there is currently an afternoon Ryanair flight to EM from Knock or there are trains to Dublin from Sligo at 07:00, 09:00 etc with a journey time of roughly 3 hours. Current cost is 22 euros but the bike will be extra. There is a limit of 3 cycles on these trains. I will probably stay another day and return from Dun Laoghaire on the Fastferry on Tuesday 31st.
The overnights are, therefore, as in Clyde's comment. We have plenty of scope in Belfast, and hostels in Londonderry (Paddy's Palace as suggested by Shawn?)and then the 4 Irish YHA hostels which can probably be booked on line. I will do Tra-na-Rosan and Errigal if others will volunteer for Bushmills (also consider Portrush), Londonderry, Donegal (IYHA) and Sligo (IYHA)

  7. Thanks Peter

I am booking a flight on 23rd from em to belfast city with BMIbaby arrives Belfast 8.05am. A short walk 400m to Ikea belfast for breakfast (free coffee! with ikea family card)and then to Decathlon Belfast to purchase my bike!(rockrider 5.0 at £99!) Fix on carrier and panniers bottle cage etc and meet guys in belfast city. Paddys Palace is around £17.00 pp/pn for 1 night. Looks good regards character and craic. Paddys palace in Derry is even cheaper at £79.00 total for a 6 bed dorm ie £13 each. If all agreed I would be happy to book the Derry Palace for the 25th ie 6 room Dorm . Is Ian likely to be joining us and when?

  8. Peter

Can you supply details of the reasonably priced B & B in Ballymena? Anyone know what travel plans Martin has? Will he be joining us with Peter at Ballymena on the 24th?

  9. I share Peter's fear of Sunday travel. An alternative way of getting to Ballymena for the 24th would be to use the Sustrans Antrim Coastal route, possibly staying overnight on the 23rd at a seaside resort like Whitehead, or even Larne.

An early meeting would be good.

    Martin
