Dates

Hi folks. Happy New Year! I thought I'd get in early with my preferred dates for the Ireland trip. Could we maybe have the ride on much the same week as last year's ride, ie week beginning Mon 23 May 2011? Failing that, the week before, Mon 16 May, plus or minus a few days on either side of those two weeks (for me a Monday start is not essential). Did anyone have any ideas which differ vastly from these dates? Has anyone had any new thoughts about where we are going?

  1. Happy New Year. Either of these dates would be ok for me. I have been having a look at a web site that organises cycle tours in Ireland, and it may worth a look to check out any routes they have discovered that we could use.Web address: cycleholidaysireland.com

  2. Hi Maldwyn. I'm glad someone monitors this blog! You've reminded me that, when we were on that Newark ride recently, someone (Roger?)told me about a book from Cicerone Guides (I'd never heard of them before) called Cycle Touring in Ireland.

  3. Clyde,
I checked out the Cicerone guide and it looked pretty good, so I have ordered a copy from Amazon.

Is there any other Dragonriders out there with thoughts on Irelend.

  4. I've done likewise, Maldwyn. Under 10 quid with postage. Some good deals from Dash4It this month: OS Landrover(!) maps £4.89 inc postage. I haven't checked with Amazon; maybe they are even cheaper there? BTW, before anyone else mentions it, I think I've rewritten history in my first comment above! (last year's dates)

  5. Either date would be OK and any start day so long as the trip did not include 2 Wednesdays.
The current suggested areas are Galway (The Burren/Connemara) or N.Ireland (Lough Neagh, Giants Causeway) with a majority favouring NI. Either would be good as far as I was concerned.
One snag for me (and maybe Martin) is the reduction of Stena Fastferry sailings from Holyhead - just one per day at 10:00 which is too early to be able to travel from Derby that morning.
I have some OS type maps of both areas as well as most of the NI Sustrans NCN routes.
Perhaps we need a meeting (Flowerpot??)

  6. A meeting, yes - next week? Suggest an evening, someone. I got this Cicerone book in the post. The first tour looks good: a circular taking in Belfast, Derry, the GC and close to Lough Neagh. Maybe a diversion to the Inishowen Peninsula would be poss? Maybe that would be too far.

  7. Wed or Thurs evening would be ok for me

  8. Thursday would be best for me of the two and I believe that Shawn has a day off on Thursdays. If so, how about 19:30? - Thursday 3rd February (if you come by train, Clyde, I think your train gets to Derby about 10 past the hour?)

  9. Thursday at 1930 then! I'm starting to go away from Tom Cooper's routes (Cicerone book) but I know that I really want to see NI. I've never even been there before, let alone cycled there. I'd like to take in as many NCN routes as poss also. It's our raison d’ĂȘtre, after all!
